7th Annual Cuyahoga County Elder Abuse Forum

The Changing Face of Trauma: Healing Approaches for Victims and Professionals”

The County’s seventh annual Elder Abuse Awareness Forum was a success, with a sold out crowd and a wonderful line up of speakers.  The purpose of the Forum is to raise awareness of the issue of physical, emotional and financial abuse within a growing elder population. Last year in Cuyahoga County, over 2,300 adults were known victims of abuse, neglect, self-neglect, abandonment and exploitation. Nationwide, it is estimated that only about one in 23 incidents of abuse are ever reported.

Anissa Aikens, a Social Services Worker 3 with the Adult Protective Services Unit, was recognized as the 2019 “APS Worker of the Year.”

This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Jamie Marich.  An author and founder of the Dancing Mindfulness community, a facilitator training program, Marich is a clinical counselor who leads trainings and retreats on trauma, addiction and mindfulness worldwide.  Dr. Marich presented on the topic of “The Art and Science of Trauma Focused Care.”  Her presentation is available for download:
